Battery is fried. Replacement is really difficult and overall not worth it when you can buy a good working one on eBay with a charger for $30. Classic, any gen. Give it a fresh battery and a CF mod and it will last forever. Repairs and mods are pretty easy too. Thereās places that will do the battery for you.

Try reinstalling iTunes. Apple aren't overly interested in supporting discontinued models but iTunes is still supposed to be backwards compatible with all previously released devices. I'm happily still able to update an iPod classic and a 4th gen. nano with the latest iTunes. You might be able to get the device restored in an Apple Store.
